Joycelyn Christine
Darcueil
Dec 25, 1939 — Sep 7, 2026
Joycelyn Christine Darcueil was born on December 25, 1939, to parents David and Irene Glanville in Arima, Trinidad.
Joycelyn was affectionately known as Joyce, Ma, Mama Joyce, Granny, Tanty Joyce, Ba’jon Granny, and “Chubbs” by her son-in-law, Michael.
Joyce was the second of eleven Glanville children who grew up in the big house on the corner of 12th Street and 8th Avenue in Barataria, Trinidad: Earl, Etta, Harold, Linda, David, Horace, George, Larry, Wayne, and Teddy.
From a young age, Joyce was kind, caring, and giving. As the second oldest of several siblings, she helped her mother care for and raise her nine younger siblings. She cooked, cleaned, did laundry, and tended to her family's needs. But this is no Cinderella story. For Joyce, caring for the people she loved was an honor. It came naturally to her and prepared her for a lifetime of nurturing not only her own children, but countless others who came to know and love her.
Joyce attended John Donaldson Technical Institute, where she studied fashion design. She later attended culinary school, where she honed her Caribbean cuisine skills. Already an amazing cook in her own right, her culinary education took her talents to an even higher level. Cooking became yet another way Joyce cared for and brought together the people she loved.
In 1961, Joyce married Leslie Carlton Darcueil, a Trinidad & Tobago Police officer who later became a Police Superintendent. Together, they built a family and welcomed five children: Ann Marie, Gloria, Susan, Brian, and Victoria. Joyce and Leslie shared their lives together until his passing in 2006.
At the heart of Joyce’s life was family. She was the matriarch—the person people could turn to for love, care, comfort, and guidance. Joyce had a way of mothering everyone, whether or not they were her own. To be welcomed into her life was to become part of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Irene, her husband, Leslie, and nine siblings. She is survived by her brother, Wayne Glanville of Barataria, Trinidad; her five children and their spouses, Ann Marie Darcueil of Brooklyn, NY, Gloria and Michael Barnett of Jersey City, NJ, Susan and Reynold Feracho of Stone Mountain, GA, Brian Darcueil of Morvant, Trinidad, and Victoria and Evens Dumay of Bayonne, NJ; her first cousin, Marjorie Winchester of the Bronx, NY; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and dozens of beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews across Trinidad and North America.
Joyce’s journey concluded on Monday, September 7, 2026 after succumbing to her long term illness.
Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Joyce knew how special she was. Her beautiful smile could light up a room; her hilariously fierce and memorable word choice always supplied her family with material for future jokes, and her infectious laugh was impossible to forget. But perhaps her greatest gift was the way she made people feel cared for. She was a mother to many, the matriarch of her family, and a source of love that extended across generations.
Joyce’s sun may have set, but the love, lessons, laughter, and warmth she gave so freely live on in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many people fortunate enough to have been loved by her.
Her smile will be remembered. Her love will be felt. And her family will carry her with them always.
